Around Here

By Leo Coughlin

Nobody asked me, but --

. . .The relief efforts in the wake of the tsunami were magnificent. But how about the 165,000 people A MONTH who die of malaria?

. . ."The Very Thought of You," sung by the great and inimitable Billie Holliday makes me cry.

. . .Once again we have the rich manure of secrecy and cover up in one local burg causing more problems than the underlying issue. Nixon and Watergate; Clinton and Lewinsky; numerous other examples -- they never learn. In the local case, there's a chance this is going to backfire in a real bad way.

. . .Whatever became of Jennifer Fitzgerald?

. . .The great irony -- Those of us who watched Johnny Carson for 30 years got the feeling we "knew" him; those in life who were closest to him never felt the same kinship.

. . .Does anyone with half a brain believe that the Abu Ghraib prison events were carried out by lower enlisted ranks only? Another case of the hicogolorums getting away with it.

. . .Tony Dungy continues to work on his reputation -- with me -- as one of the worst coaches ever seen in the NFL. With the talent possessed by the Colts, Indianapolis should have beaten the Patriots. Instead, Dungy kept the offensive shackles on, just as he did when he ruined the Bucs' chances for glory.

. . .It appears that the advertising chief at the little tabloid in the county has been demoted and is just another face in the ranks now. A former mainstay of the advertising staff was bumped to a new location. Editorial folks are shivering in their sneakers. All part of the slow but sure takover to give the tabloid a new face -- in all ways.

. . .Strong hints now that there will be a dramatic housecleaning in one local burg before April's flowers bloom. There has been a desperate attempt to shore up the position of one grandee but it has sputtered.

. . .I love the way the corners of Reeba McEntire's mouth turn up. So perky! So darling!

. . .I slipped up and tuned into Chris Matthews one night recently. How can anyone stand this guy? Totally offensive and wottajerk!

. . .The recent brouhaha brought about by the Big Paper's exploration of the uniform numbers worn by well known players can be laid to one thing -- the whole exercise was naive, defining the author as having no historical sports knowledge whatsoever. Ho hum, par for the course.

. . .The main reason you see those "inspired" features in the Big Paper more than once is because a second version needs to be run to correct the mistakes made in the first. With so many errors in the BP, how can one tell that anything, on first reading, is correct?

. . .The lass once tabbed "Miss Largo," based on her supposed civic activity, raises the question among some observers as to why she doesn't lend all her helpful talent to burgeoning Seminole, where she actually lives.

. . .Because of the weak laws in Massachusetts that protect priests who homosexually rape children, ex-priest Paul Shanley will slide. This is the same state that allowed the arch-criminal, Bernard Law, accessory before and after the fact to priest rapes, escape any justice at all. Law is now ensconced in Rome under the protection of the Vatican.
