Around Here

By Leo Coughlin

It seems as though there is never any end to the opportunity for wonderment.

The incompetence of some people is unbelievable, chutzpah seems to scale ever new heights and some folks, it turns out, have the guts of a second storey man.

Consider . . .

The administrator of Pinellas County makes half the money the president of the United States does. With a budget 1/2000th of the federal outlay and a population not quite 1/290th of the national population, something is very out of whack here.

Members of Congress get less money. Supreme Court justices are paid less.

Once upon a time, government service was considered a sacrifice when it came to pay and benefits. No longer, obviously, because the pay scales for public employees in Pinellas County are outta sight.

Recent pay raises have been in the high five figures.

All this as a result of scaling upward the salary ranges.

And guess what? It all went by the County Commission with no discussion whatsovever. Some said they knew nothing about it!

Yup, the seven stooges just sat there while the pockets of Pinellas County citizens got picked and the fat cats got enriched.

And remember, Pinellas County is the government unit that takes responsibility for nothing. Examples of that are manifest.

How's this for chutzpah?

If you are a Tampa Bay Bucs fan who is a season ticket holder and you have had quite enough of the stumblebums and want to sit ‘em out, hold on.

You can't renege on those season ducats. Somewhere along the line you signed an agreement, whether you know it or not, that says you have to stick with the contract come wins or losses, prosperity or being broke.

And if you don't -- you can be sued.

If the booboisie in these parts can't see through the money grubbing Glaziers by now, what does it take?

While the dimwits on the Pinellas County School Board worry themselves sick over whether some kid's underwear is showing, or bite their nails down to the elbow fretting over some coach's not unusual language, kids are being slaughtered getting off school buses.

And nothing is done.

The squad who is supposed to be overseeing school affairs in the big building in Largo spin wheels and get exercised over nothing while the vital stuff goes unnoticed.

This high spending group gets scant press coverage. As a result, they are not held to high standards and the slackness is disgusting.

A coach of 23 years standing was removed and banished to another area to work only as a teacher for using the word for a color and the word for a body part.

Neither of which is profanity.

If it was a racial thing, which no one wanted to touch with 40-foot pole, fine. And the body part thing did not qualify as profanity. Vulgarity maybe, but not profanity.

The whole thing did no damage whatsoever to the young athlete involved, who will hear similar talk wherever he plays, and had no adverse effect on anything.

But throw something like that into the School Board den and it is red meat they can get their fangs into.

Meanwhile, the school board dumbos have a record of blithely letting kids be endangered at unmanned school crossings and of kids becoming traffic victims alighting from school buses.

Tragic.
