CLEARWATER -- Clearwater's City Council went through a routine business agenda Monday night amid talk in the chamber that traffic could be flowing as soon as today (Thursday) across the new Memorial Causeway Bridge.
Before the meeting, Councilman Bill Jonson said that the bridge availability was under the jurisdiction of the state Department of Transportation, but his understanding was that one-way traffic would begin Thursday with the other direction to open in a day or two.
Plans had been made for a grand opening of the span August 27, which still may take place. The bridge was due to open in April, 2004, but construction was plagued with several sebacks.
At the outset of the meeting, which Mayor Frank Hibbard described as a combined work session, regular meeting, the city recognized employees for long service and other awards were made.
The area's Make A Difference Fishing Tournament is noting its 10th year and as part of its program there will be a fund raiser at the Harborview Center Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event will include a benefit auction.
