Andy Rodgers, long prominent In Belleair Beach life, dies

He was a little guy with a big brain that was stuffed with all kinds of wonderful knowledge that he was always willing to share in his impish way.

Andy Rodgers sometimes attracted lightning in the political vagaries of Belleair Beach, but he was always courteous and polite with the exactitude of the Old South that now seems to be lost.

He died in a Tampa nursing home September 14 after a long illness.

Born in Georgia, he grew up in Flagler County in the little town of Bunnell mostly. Andy always had stories of the doings in that place where his Dad, whom he obviously adored, was some sort of factotum.

He graduated from the University of Florida and was proud to tell you so. He was a combat veteran (imagine that little sprout of a guy in that situation!) of World War II where he earned a Bronze Star, but almost never talked about that stuff.

Andy was instrumental in the early days of University of South Florida where he was a vice president and chief financial officer.

Later, he spent his working days with the well connected but nevertheless always maintained his delightful modesty.

How proud he was of the Gators and how sad that he will sing “We Are the Boys of Florida” never again.
