Comprehensive Immigration Bill Being Voted On In The U.S. Senate

By Carolyn Cormey

It is time for each of us to let our U.S. Senators know how we feel about another "Comprehensive" Immigration Bill to include - "A pathway to citizenship" for at least 11 million illegal aliens, a guest-worker program made available to illegal aliens still outside our country - with promised Employer Sanctions and Border Control, all crowded into a single huge bill.

This sounds like pretty much a repeat of the last "comprehensive" immigration bill we all supported when President Ronald Reagan told us that his bill including "a pathway to citizenship" (called amnesty), along with the employer sanctions for continuing to hire illegal aliens and strict border control, would "fix" the illegal immigration problem. Well, fraudulent documents were rampant and about twice as many more illegal aliens became citizens than were anticipated. Oh yes, while the illegal aliens got citizenship - we just never quite got around to the border control and employer sanctions that we were promised as part of Reagan's "comprehensive" immigration bill. The corporations who sponsor those election fundraisers for our incumbent legislators and who like the flow of "cheap" labor - could it be that their influence side-lined our legislators' will to actually carry through with implementing the parts of the legislation that regulated or sanctioned corporations and did not stop the flow of illegal aliens at our borders?

When our legislators look at illegal aliens they see a new, potential voting block to capture. They are confident that their constituents can be dazzled by their sincere "dance" in front of the cameras about another "comprehensive" immigration bill that really, really, will solve the illegal immigration problem this time. Just like last time, after passing it, they can fund and implement only what is needed to pacify us - until we, the fickle "public" glance away to the next crisis that our media will quickly serve us - because they are part of the "game" too.

Our media is already hard at work - showing us all sorts of illegal aliens who are marching in our cities with their Mexican flags - demanding their rights. Many of them demand that we teach their children in their own language and provide translators to them for public services. Our legislators watch them, see the crowds and know what they demand - but they NEVER hear from you on what you want - no, what you demand in exchange for your vote and financial support. Our legislators take us for granted assuming that our particular political party affiliation locks our support to their candidacy and they seem more interested in doing what will please a new voting block. This becomes more important than really dealing with the issue we care about - stopping the inflow of more illegal aliens by securing our border FIRST by separate legislation to deal humanely with those who live in our country illegally, controlling employer exploitation and putting on the "pathway to citizenship" those who are proved to have added value to our country.

The final vote on this by the U.S. Senate has been put off until after this recess. Senator Mel Martinez is one of the authors of this "comprehensive" mega-immigration bill that currently does not even except out those illegal aliens who are felons from "the pathway to citizenship." Senator Bill Nelson also appears to be in favor of a comprehensive bill lumping everything together. Neither Senator is supportive of any at legislation that takes securing our borders FIRST as a separate piece of legislation. The current bill under consideration is also crowded with new expenses to be loaded onto the Federal Government to reimburse border states for all the services that are provided to illegal aliens and all the services that will be needed to check the complicated maze of sorting out the "tiered" time requirement that determines the specific "pathway to citizenship" for each illegal alien.
