Local food pantries have a doubly tough job when schools let out for summer. That's when the parents of hungry children who are served by school lunch programs will turn to their local food pantry for additional food - and that food is supplied primarily by the Letter Carriers' Food Drive on Saturday, May 13.
In Florida, the Letter Carriers Food Drive is receiving a big pick-me-up this year as Publix Super Markets is coming on board and producing 7.7 million plastic grocery bags that will be delivered to every residential address in the state.
Customers are asked to place their donation in a grocery bag and hang it from their mailbox. The Food Drive helps local Food Banks over the summer months when children are out of school and the need is great. This year the local Food Banks will once again be counting on the letter carriers to deliver.
