Alzheimer's Patients Create Works Of Art

DUNEDIN - The 8th annual Memories in the Making Art Auction honoring art work, produced by Alzheimer's patients, will be hosted by the Alzheimer's Association - Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, May 19, at the Dr. William E. Hale Senior Activity Center, 330 Douglas Avenue in Dunedin. Tickets are $25 or $50 for patron seating.

The Memories in the Making program uses art to help patients gain self-confidence and to express their thoughts, feelings and fears. Many pieces recall fond memories of earlier times and favorite places. "To see a patient, who is some cases can no longer verbally or physically communicate, create their own special painting is so moving. It is equally touching to witness the delight - and often surprise - of the family members when they first see the work their loved one has created," said Gloria Smith, president of the Alzheimer's Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter.

These creations, beautifully framed, are part of the Art Auction, which includes both live and silent auction pieces. Attendees, celebrating the Alzheimer patient's life through their art work, will be treated to fabulous hors d'oeuvres; a cash bar will be available.

Tickets for Memories in the Making can be obtained by calling (727) 578-2558 or (800) 772-8672. All proceeds go to support caregiver trainings, 24/7 Helpline, care consultations and continuing to provide the Memories in the Making training program to caregivers.
