CLEARWATER - The Francis Wilson Playhouse, 302 Seminole Street, announces the presentation of their original musical: Francis Wilson-"The Musical, The Man & His Theatre." Performances will be held from June 8 through June 18.
Francis Wilson, the first President of Actor's Equity and world famous performer in the late 1800's through the early 1900's, is well known only in live theatre history. His dynamic personality was evident from the time he entertained Union Troops as a teenager. He became the National Fencing Champion at age 23 and rose from theatre maintenance man to owner, star and promoter of his own theatre company by the late 1800's. In a world where there was no radio, no TV, no movies or Internet, Francis Wilson became an international personality, whose leadership was respected and sought after.
Fortunately for Clearwater, Francis Wilson chose our city as his winter retreat. After his retirement, he was friend and mentor to the Little Theatre of Clearwater. He found a benefactor, Mary Bock, to donate the monies needed to build a community theatre on Seminole Street just before the original bridge to Clearwater Beach. The theatre, much renovated, still stands and has presented quality community theatre productions now for 77 years.
The public is invited to this musical tribute to a man who gave so much to our community and the world.
Call 446-1360, Monday - Friday, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., for performance details or visit the Francis Wilson Playhouse website at www.franciswilsonplayhouse.org.
