Construction on Phase I of Beach Walk continues. The contractor is working on storm and utility placement on the east side of Coronado Drive between Fifth Street and Brightwater, and also between Third Street and Gulfview Boulevard on the west side of Coronado Drive. Westra Construction is working with public and private utilities to begin buried conduit installation between Devon Street and Third Street on the west side of Coronado Drive. Survey crews will begin defining the right-of-way south of Fifth Street in the near future. One lane of traffic is open in each direction, and the speed limit is 20 miles per hour in construction zones. Northbound and southbound traffic is flowing on the east side of Coronado Drive.
The contractor is vigilant about environmental issues during construction. Westra complies with water testing requirements set by the Department of Environmental Protection by periodically pulling a sample of dewatering discharge and sending it out for analysis. Dewatering discharge goes to inlets where they have "filter fabric" to catch possible sediments that may get into our water. Finally, "turbidity barriers" at three storm system outfalls assure that sediments do not travel into the harbor. Every week and whenever it rains more than 0.5," National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System inspections are conducted to ensure that all the stormwater runoff control measures are in place and operating.
