On January 18-19, 2004 in a 12-hour City Commission meeting, the city of Tarpon Springs, despite the opposition from the largest citizen's turnout in the history of Tampa Bay, voted in favor of the proposal by Wal-Mart to build a Supercenter on the banks of the Anclote River. This meeting was attended by over 400 citizens who feel this development is unnecessary and will have a negative impact on the Anclote River, the small town businesses, the small town ambiance, and the history of this Greek community which attracts tourists daily.
Friends of the Anclote River and Concerned Citizens of the Anclote are persistent and will continue on, however, it does require legal assistance. Therefore, mark your calendars for the "Find Another Site" Music Benefit to be held Saturday, September 16, from 2 - 12 p.m. The event will be held at the (Java) Junction Coffeehouse, 703 Franklin Street (intersection of Myrtle and Franklin) in Downtown Clearwater. A barbeque dinner will be available.
There will be a wide variety of music during the day with De Lei-ed Parrots (a popular Parrothead band), Elevation (Country/Gospel), Bob Lever, Rebecca Pulley, Jules, Kathryn Stafford, Cold Harbor, Tom Scudiero (the "storyteller"), Sunset Bridge, Jamie Perlow, Michael Southern Band and the List goes on.
