Seniors Take Over Enterprise Village For A Day

(Hilda White, far right, is pictured with Leslie Tomlin, lead resource teacher at Enterprise Village, center, and retired teacher and Enterprise Village volunteer Jackie Wogoman at the Seniors & Scholars Enterprise Village Day at the Gus Stavros Institute in Largo last month. White was one of 100 retirees invited to "run the city" for a day. The event was intended to give the adults a better understanding of the hands-on program that teaches fifth grade students about the free enterprise system and how it benefits the students. Participants had the opportunity to be mayor, run and publish a town newspaper, run a radio station, host a Home Shopping program, manage a utilities corporation, work in a bank or restaurant and more. White was caught on camera in the souvenir shop set up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the simulated village. This was the first time in the program's 20-year history that adults have run the city. Each year over 17,000 students from both public and private schools benefit from the real-life lessons learned at the facility located at 12100 Starkey Rd.
