The Way I See It

By cj pollick

Why Chris Matthews? - Can you imagine going into a televised political debate where you know the so-called unbiased moderator is actually biased and in favor of your opponent?

Welcome to the recent debate between Charlie Crist and Jim Davis (with a third party candidate there just to add another opponent to Charlie Crist.)

Christ,"I'll talk until I find a question" Matthews (straight from his San Francisco newsroom training) tried his best to discredit Charlie Crist in favor of Jim Davis. Crist, however, held his ground and presented his views regardless of Matthews moderating antics and attempt to steal debate time.

Do you think Russ Limbaugh could become 2008's presidential moderator during Florida's televised debate? After all, if Chris Matthews is unbiased, so is Russ Limbaugh.

Who picked Matthews?

He was a disgrace to what was alleged to be a fair debate.

Matthews unbiased? Hmmm. Both Bill O'Reilly and Chris Matthews have stated they are not affiliated with either major political party. Does anyone believe it?

Jim Davis did a fine job in trying to present his views to the audience.

Crist did a fine job. The third fellow? He merely took air time and added a few funny one-liners. The debate was supposed to reflect differences between Crist and Davis. Unfortunately, many viewers learned little from the debate except that both candidates have spent too much money to win the seat.

What to expect if Democrats win - Tax increases. Bush tax cuts expire in 2010. Democrats would not renew Bush tax cuts. Tax rates would rise . . . and that includes capital gains taxes from 15 percent to 20 percent. Thus, folks with money might not be so anxious to invest in certain investment vehicles and the American economy would suffer.

Government Medicare Plan. Democrats would likely support a government-run Medicare drug plan. Private insurance would likely be eliminated from things called Medicare Advantage Plans.

Wage Increases. Minimum wage would be increased under the Democrats from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour. Unions would likely be allowed to enter a business without an election. Unions would gather signatures and force a company to add a union shop. (And you wondered what the various unions wanted for their political support?)

Trade Deals. Trade deals without clever add-on amendments would be repealed. Democrats have not favored trade deals with Central America; thus, those trade deals would likely cease. This action could hurt current trade programs with Central and South America... as well as other foreign nations.

Liberal Judges. Democrats have already stated they would not support judges that were conservative. That means a return to liberal activist judges who make law instead of interpreting law written by elected legislators.

Changes in store for America? Democrats would not leave Iraq in the near future, like some people think. Democrats would, however, leave Iraq faster than current military leaders opinions about an exit strategy. Illegal immigration? Neither Democrats nor Republicans have a plan to stop illegal immigration in America. Thus, illegal immigration issues would be the same under either administration. Social security? Neither political party has talked about reforming social security.

The booming econoomy and stock market? Financial experts have stated that the stock market would fall with a change in political leadership.

Think Before You Vote - 1. The economy is good. The stock market is at an all time high. (Guess those tax cuts do work).

2. Unemployment is low - 4.6 percent.

3. We have not been attacked in five years though there are many who would love to change that fact.

4. There have been mistakes made in the war in Iraq (there always are), but pulling our troops out now would be a big mistake and could embolden the terrorists.

Though many Republicans have been disappointing, the alternatives are down right frightening.

General Election November 7, 2006 - A writer in the Wall Street Journal stated, "Early newspaper publishers scoffed at the idea that they should hide their political prejudices under a cloak of objectivity." I'm surprised the writer of this column did not say that current newspaper publishers also do not hide their political prejudices under a cloak of objectivity. Is there anyone that believes the press is unbiased?

"The news pages were unapologitically partisan..." explained the Wall Street writer. The way I see it, not much has changed over the years. In fact, news pages are perhaps worse than when William Corbett in his Federalist Newspaper wrote, " To profess impartiality here would be absurd."

Of course, the press is biased. We read literary bias every day-- we can only be thankful that you do not believe what you read when it comes to issues that involves politics.

Who does not believe that Chris Mathews is a liberal? For that matter, who does not believe that Bill O'Reilly is a conservative? Both media men claim to be "independents" and not affiliated with any major political party. Really? Both men clearly express biased political views and viewers know it.

Cut this out and take it to the voting booth. You might be surprised at the number of questions on this year's ballot.

Regardless of your political persuasion, vote on November 7. Every vote is important.
