During this past election season, a frequently asked question was "Why didn't the City of Indian Rocks Beach participate in the election campaigns regarding the County Charter Amendments, PSFRD Tax Rate Increase Referendum or the IRB referendum to add the City Charter a prohibition of the use of eminent domain powers to take private property for private use in the name of economic development?"
Specifically, the IRB City Charter prohibits the City Commission, members of the Commission acting in their official capacity, Charter Officers and employees from participating, making contributions, assisting, etc. in activities that favor or oppose any candidate or referendum issue., This provision, Section 4.6 (e), was approved by IRB voters in 2004 with a 65.78% purality.
I personally support the letter and spirit of this provision and believe voters inform themselves and make good decisions on behalf of the city, county or special district within which they reside.
