The office of Pinellas County Property Appraiser Jim Smith will be accepting applications for an additional property tax exemption for qualified senior citizens from January 1 through March 1. This year, 17 municipalities plus unincorporated Pinellas offer this additional exemption. Applications will qualify if all of the following requirements are met:
First time applicants should bring proof of age; if required to file a Federal Income Tax Return bring Form 1040 or 1040A for the year 2006; if not required to file a Federal Income Tax Return bring documentation such as SSA 1099, or any 1099, bank statements or other documents that will show your total income.
This exemption does not automatically renew like the homestead exemption does. Citizens who received the Senior Exemption last year WILL BE ABLE TO RENEW BY MAIL THIS YEAR. A renewal form will be mailed by the end of January.
Any of the Property Appraiser offices will accept applications from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Special dates and times have been arranged during February at outside venues as well as Sunday hours at four of their offices.
