Cyclocross Reaches the South

LARGO - Cyclocross is a time-honored tradition of winter bicycle racing in Europe, which is now becoming very popular in the states. What is cyclocross, you ask? It's a combination of road racing and mountain biking on a short course. Race courses are typically 1 to 2.5 miles in length and last from 30 minutes to 1 hour. The most interesting aspect of cyclocross is, racers at various points on the course have to dismount and run while carrying their machines over man-made or natural barriers (18 inches height). Because the courses are small and racers having to run with their bikes, cyclocross leads itself to being a terrific spectator sport. Competitors love it too because of how close the crowds are and all the action.

Florida State Cyclocross Champions Series will be held on Sundays in Largo at the Nature Park Preserve, 150 Highland Ave. S.E., January 14, 21 and 28, and February 11 - start time is 8 a.m.
