Clearwater Audubon Society Program and Field Trips for February

Program - Clearwater Audubon Society programs are designed to be both educational and entertaining. Anyone is welcome to attend. Programs begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Education Center at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater. For more information call 781-0745

2/5 - Ecology of Florida Grasshopper Sparrows at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve - Marianne Korosy, Ph.D. Student in Conservation Biology at UCF, presents new research using radio tracking to learn about survival of juvenile and adult Florida Grasshopper Sparrows during Fall and Winter months when they share the dry prairie with migrant Henslow, LeConte's, Swamp and Savannah Sparrows.

Field Trips - All field trips are open to the public and most are free. Van trips involve sharing van rental expenses and require reservations. In all cases, a contact is noted who can provide additional details. When the meeting place is Tri-City Mall, assemble outside the Party City store near US Rte. 19. When the meeting place is Westfield Shopping Town-Countryside Mall, assemble outside Sears near US Rte. 19. Where there are no bathroom facilities at the field trip site, the trip is marked X; rest stops will be provided en route. For all trips, please bring drinking water.

2/1, 8:30 a.m., - Eagle Lakes Park for Raptors, Songbirds, Water Birds & other Wildlife. Drive to trailhead then 2-mile walk through former orange groves and cattle ranch. Meet at park entrance. Keene & Belleair Roads. Contact Mike McDonald, 727-538-8688. X

2/3, 8:30 a.m. - Moccasin Lake Nature Park: Resident & Migratory Songbirds, Water Birds & Raptors in Oak & Xeric Hammocks. Easy .75 mile walk on shell trail & boardwalks. Contact Joan Brigham, 727-447-9367.

2/3, 7 a.m. - Bartow Borrow Pits: Resident & Migratory Water Birds galore in restored Phosphate Mine, plus Raptors & Songbirds! Bring lunch and water. Meet at Tri-City Shopping Center corner of E. Bay & Rte. 19. Contact Dana Kerstein, 727-441-1609. X

2/10, 6:45 a.m. - Myakka River State Park: Songbirds, Water & Wading Birds, Raptors & other Wildlife. Walk canopy bridge for a different view. 1-2 miles on trails & boardwalks. Bring lunch & water. Meet at Tri-City Shopping Center, corner of Rte. 19 and E. Bay Dr. Contact Lynn Sumerson. 727-596-8822.

2/17, 6:45 a.m. - McKethon Lake State Park. Migratory Waders & Songbirds plus Raptors in Oak, Pine & Wetlands habitat. 1-2 miles sand trails & paved roads. Meet at Countryside Shopping Town, 27001 Rte. 19 N. in front of Sears. Contact Lynn Sumerson, 727-596-8822 or Mike McDonald, 727-538-8688.

2/24, 6 a.m. - Kissimmee Prairie State Preserve: Grasshopper & Bachman's Sparrows, Caracaras, Songbirds & prairie flora in Florida's largest preserve. Marianne Korosy and park biologist leaders.
