LARGO - Original art by Florida Highwayman Sylvester M. Wells will be on display in the gallery of the Largo Public Library throughout the month of February. Meet the artist in the library's gallery on Sunday, February 11, from 2-4 p.m. as he talks about his adventures as a Florida Highwayman. Wells will demonstrate his artistic talents and sell original works. Primarily a group of self-taught African-American artists, the Florida Highwaymen became successful by painting scenic landscapes and seascapes, using brilliant colors to portray wind-bent palms, churning oceans and dramatic sunsets. The paintings were then sold along the highways of east Florida and the Georgia coast, often from the trunks of their cars.
