One-Act Opera to be presented at Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center

The Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center presents Florida Lyric Opera's highlights from Cavalleria Rusticana, on March 31, at 7:30 p.m., at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, 324 Pine Street (inside City Hall), Tarpon Springs.

This popular one-act opera, composed by Pietro Mascagni (1863 -1945), is full of high passion and drama -- an unfaithful wife and murder. Traditionally presented as a double-bill feature with Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, this performance will be enhanced by special guests, the Tarantella Dancers of the Italian American Society of St. Petersburg, who will perform with traditional Italian dancing. Cavalleria Rusticana (rustic chivalry) was first performed in Rome on May 17, 1890, with the libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tarzetti and Guido Menasci, after a play written by Giovanni Verga. By far, it is considered Mascagni's best-known work, and was an instant success, remaining ever since as one of the most popular of all operas.

The Tarpon Springs performance stars soprano Maria Moon as Santuzza, soprano Suzanna Epple as Lola, and tenor Dino Diliberti as Turiddu. The highlights will be narrated by Rosalia Maresca, director of Florida Lyric Opera.

Admission is $15, center member or student, $13. Box office (727) 942-5605.
