On Tuesday, March 27th, at Timber Green Golf and Country Club,
LIADO/ The Italian American Women of Today, held their first "I Make The Best
Meatball Contest". There were 15 contestants that were in the competition
and there were five judges: Jerry Wells the former owner/manager from Guido's Restaurant; Chef Peter Kern and Rita Aguis, from Marchman Technical Education Center, Commercial Cooking Class; Richard and Chrissie Parris of NY Pasta Factory, on Little Road in New Port Richey; Irene Ramasanto, sister of Maria the owner of La Dolce Vita, on Mitchell Blvd, Trinity, that had the tough job of taste testing the different varieties of meatballs.
Fran Capolupo, Ellenjane Mancuso and Annette Smetzer LIADO members added up the votes from the judges.
The four winners were, in 3rd place Mary Ann Szwed , in 2nd place Barbara Abela, President of LIADO, in 1st place Edith Liotto, and the Grand Prize winner is.... Millie Carpanzano, of New Port Richey. She was awarded a $100 from LIADO.
Here is her winning recipe for "Homemade Italian Meatballs"
1 Large egg
3/4 Cup of soft breadcrumbs, moistened with 5 tbs. of water
2 Cloves of garlic, finely chopped
1/4 Cup of grated parmesan cheese
2 Tbs. of fresh parsley, chopped
2 Tbs. of fresh chopped basil, chopped
1/4 Tsp. of salt
1/4 Tsp. of black pepper
1 Lb. of ground beef
1 Lb. of ground pork
In a large bowl combine the first eight ingredients. Add the beef and the pork. Mix Well. Shape into meatballs and fry in 2 tbs. of olive oil until browned. (Or you can bake the meatballs in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes, or until browned.) Drain on paper towels. Add to tomato sauce and simmer for about 20 minutes.
