Charter Review Committee Special Meeting Changed

CLEARWATER - The Charter Review committee meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, May 24, at 2:30 p.m., has been rescheduled for Thursday, June 14, 4:30 p.m., at the Main Library, 100 N. Osceola Ave.

Dr. J. Benton, from the Department of Government and International Affairs at the University of South Florida, will be the new presenter and will discuss forms of government and governance trends throughout Florida cities in the meeting. A change to Clearwater's current council/manager form of government is among the possible amendments under the Charter Review Committee's consideration. Dr. Benton will talk about the pros and cons of possible alternative government forms with committee members.

The public is welcome to attend and watch the academic presentation. The Charter Review Committee will hold a public hearing at a later date to receive public comment. The Committee is a group of citizens periodically appointed by the City Council to examine the provisions in the city charter and recommend changes. The current Committee convened in January and is expected to make its recommendations later this year. The City Council will review the recommendations, and those that are accepted will appear on the March 2008 ballot.
