Tina Carter, president of the Suncoast Avian Society, at right, and her husband Tim, who serves on the society's board, invite persons with an interest in birds to join them at the next meeting of the group at Moccasin Lake Nature Park.
CLEARWATER - The mission of the Suncoast Avian Society is "to advance and encourage the knowledge, protection, care and propagation of non-native birds in the United States; further the Science of Aviculture; and exchange knowledge, information and experiences relative to the non-native birds in the United States." Members of the non-profit organization, which was founded 34 years ago, get together at 2 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month at Moccasin Lake Nature Park, 2750 Park Trail Lane, in Clearwater.
In addition to the monthly meetings, which usually feature a guest speaker and program or demonstration, the society hosts three special events each year. Two are one-day bird fairs, usually in April and October, and the other is a two-day bird show. The society's 32nd annual Exotic & Pet Bird Show is coming up in August at the St. Petersburg Coliseum. It is billed as one of Florida's largest shows. African parrots and avian medicine are the subjects of two seminars scheduled at the event.
Officers of the organization are Tina Carter, president; Ben Saulsgiver, vice president; Jim Gatshall, secretary; and Rod Harper, treasurer. Board members at large are Tim Carter, Mark Riasch, Jenny Riasch and Jim Nelson. Saulsgiver also serves as membership chair and newsletter editor. Mari Howard is show chair.
