
Lessons and Tournament Play Dominate Courts at SW Recby Sandi Fahy
Photo by SANDI FAHY LARGO - The Tennis Center at the Southwest Recreation Complex was a busy place on August 11 as USPTA tennis pro Linda Kettell registered youngsters up to age 16 for the Hot, Hot, Hot Rookie Tournament and tennis instructor Daniel Lang worked with beginning players on the opposite courts. Among the youth taking lessons that day were twins In and Out Peepora, Taylor Cook, Costan Balgobin, Mark Nemat and Austin Mutnansky. They hope to participate in the next rookie tournament which will take place this fall. In addition to the lessons for beginners at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday mornings, there are also lessons offered on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. Instruction for advanced players and adults is also available. Nearly 60 youngsters from Pinellas and Hillsborough counties participated in the two-day tournament which ended Sunday. In the boys division, the winners were Nicholas Miljus, 10 and under; Julian Haerle, 12 and under; Chad Furst, 14 and under; and Kevin Diasti, 16 and under. Girls division winners were Katie Diasti, 10 and under; Alexandra Jones, 12 and under; Megan Lauser, 14 and under; and Anne Meredith Baldy, 16 and under. The next event planned by Kettell is the Haunted Rookie Tournament, which is scheduled on October 20. Kettell, who is Florida USPTA Pro of the Year for 2007, also teaches private lessons by appointment on the clay courts at the Southwest Complex. 13120 Vonn Road, or the hardcourts at the Highland Recreation Complex, 400 Highland Ave. NE.
