Backpacks, Books and Teddy Bears, Oh My!

PALM HARBOR - During the month of September, libraries across the country are promoting "National Library Card Sign-Up Month." With its innovative "Back to Books" concept, the Youth Services Department of Palm Harbor Library has come up with a unique way to encourage families to apply for library cards for their children. Last year, the Office Depot Store located on the corner of Nebraska Avenue and U.S. Highway 19 gave the library twenty-five backpacks as part of its grand opening festivities. The library filled them with books and library "freebies" and is offering them to school-aged children ages 5-12 who receive their first library card during September. The Registration Desk gives students who register a special certificate to take to the Children's Department for a free backpack. On the very first day of registration, seven backpacks were awarded. The staff is delighted by the response and wants to remind patrons that quantities are limited, and are going fast!

The Youth Services staff also has a fun way for preschoolers to participate in Library Card Sign-Up Month. Preschoolers who bring in their favorite stuffed animal can register them for a "Teddy Bear Library Card" in the Children's Department. The owner receives two free books, stickers, and a bookmark. Everyone's a winner!
