High School Students Sought for Nagano, Japan, Exchange Program

CLEARWATER - The City of Clearwater is now accepting applications from high school students interested in traveling abroad as part of an exchange program with Clearwater's sister city, Nagano, Japan.

This year, four students will be accepted into the program who will travel for two weeks during summer 2008. Participants will be immersed in the country's language and culture as they stay with local families. In addition, they will visit and give presentations to junior and senior high schools in the Nagano area, and get involved in educational exchanges.

To be eligible, students must be either a City of Clearwater student or attend a high school in Clearwater. Scholarships are available to cover travel costs.

Applications are available online at www.myclearwater.com or by calling the Clearwater Cultural Affairs office at 562-4832. Applications must be received no later than Nov. 27.

Nagano, Japan and Clearwater have been sister cities since 1959 with annual exchanges of teachers and students. Since 1991, 64 Pinellas County high school students have visited the city as part of the program.
