Clearwater Awards for Neighborhoods 2008 Participant Orientations ScheduledCLEARWATER - Clearwater Development & Neighborhood Services is seeking active neighborhood associations for its 2008 Clearwater Awards for Neighborhoods competition. Also known as its acronym CAN, the program awards grants to neighborhood groups that design and execute projects and programs to benefit their residents and community. Neighborhood Services will hold various orientation sessions for associations wishing to join the competition. Participating neighborhoods may enter their associations in one or more categories and are given a year to complete projects such as neighborhood picnics, clean-ups, volunteer or charity events, newsletters or Internet websites, etc. Participants document the processes and outcomes in a decorative scrapbook and, at the end of the year, scrapbooks are judged against those of competing neighborhoods for content and creativity. Cash grants to fund further projects are awarded as prizes. Last year, $25,000 in grant dollars were awarded to 11 participating neighborhood groups with prizes ranging from $500 to $5,000. All orientation sessions will be held at the Clearwater Municipal Services Building 100 S. Myrtle Ave. The following sessions are available: Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1-2 p.m.; Tues., Dec. 11, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 15, 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Wed., Jan 16, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Tues., Jan. 22, 1-2 p.m.; and Sat., Jan. 26, 10:30-11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Neighborhood Services Manager, Becky Melendez at (727) 562 4585.
