Proud Winners in Backwater's Sand Key Cookie Bake Off

The crowd at Backwaters had a football game in the background and cookies all over the restaurant. Sunday was Backwater's Cookie Bake Off that brought contestants and judges together to the ultimate challenge of picking winners. Two categories, bars and cookies, were sampled. The judges eventually found the top three bakers in each category. First place for the best cookie went to Gary Simcox and the top prize in the bars was Alex Zak. Each won a plaque, 1st Place Ribbon and a gift certificate. Second and third places went to Jennifer Hundt and Peggy Michael for cookies, and Peggy (again) and Elaine Smith for bars. Each entrant was required to bring a minimum of a dozen cookies and their recipe to share with the crowd. Both went quickly. Other entries included a spicy macaroon and hand shelled black walnut brownies. The real winners were the Backwater's patrons who got to sample all the creations. The cookie idea came as an idea to prepare the crowd for the Third Annual Chili Cook Off to be held on January 27th, 2008. This annual event draws people from all over the islands and mainland to compete for the bragging rights to the best chili in the area.
