Tampa Baycycle Announces Photo Competition Leading Up to Second Annual Tampa Baycyle

TAMPA - Tampa BayCycle announces a photo competition leading up to the second annual Tampa BayCycle campaign, to be held May 2008. Winners of the competition will have their images on display throughout May at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (200 N. Tampa St., downtown Tampa).

The New North Transportation Alliance and the Tampa Downtown Partnership are teaming up again in 2008 for Tampa BayCycle, an initiative that encourages commuters to cycle to work, school or play during the month of May, National Bike MonthTM. More than 900 cyclists - from enthusiasts to casual riders to novices - participated throughout May 2007, the inaugural Tampa BayCycle event.

"The first annual BayCycle photography contest celebrates the relationship between bicycling and everyday life in communities in and around the Tampa Bay area," said Julie Bond, executive director, New North Transportation Alliance and co-founder of Tampa BayCycle.

"We were looking for a unique way to spread our message about the benefits of cycling to reach the community at large," added Karen Kress, director of transportation and planning, Tampa Downtown Partnership and one of the organizers of Tampa BayCycle. "A photography contest celebrating the bicycle seemed like a fun way to accomplish just that."

The photography contest is open to everyone, from the amateur photographer to cyclists living in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Citrus, Pasco and Hernando counties.

"Everyone has the opportunity to share their love of bicycling with our communities," said Bond.

To enter, participants should submit an 8x10 print in either color or black and white; photographs must include a bicycle or some part of a bicycle and have been taken in the Tampa Bay area. Digital photos are admissible, and must be submitted on a labeled CD with contact information included. Participants may submit up to five images per entry. For a complete list of rules, please visit www.TampaBayCycle.com.

A panel of three judges will review each entry and determine grand prize winners for two categories - the general public and student - as well as second and third place, and honorable mention, in each category. In addition to their photographs scheduled to be on display at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts throughout the month of May, winners in each category will enjoy a combination of prizes, including bike gear and gift certificates, ranging from $500 to $25 in value.

Entry fee if $10 per entry (maximum five photos per entry) for the general public; $5 per entry (maximum five photos per entry) for students. Payment must be made by cash or check; checks should be made out to Bay Area Commuter Services.

All entries should be mailed to BayCycle Photography Contest, New North Transportation Alliance, University of South Florida CUTR, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., CUT 100, Tampa, FL, 33620. Entries must be received by Monday, March 31, 2008; winners will be contacted by April 23, 2008.

Through Tampa BayCycle, 1,001 cyclists will again be recruited to participate in the initiative and to become a part of the 'Elite 100' and 'Friends of Cycling.'
