
Largo Police Department Arrest a Subject for DUI ManslaughterLARGO - On December 12, 2007, the Largo Police Department responded to a traffic fatality crash in the 900 block of Missouri Avenue. At that time, the investigation centered around a pick up truck that had been driving northbound on Missouri Avenue. The pick up truck crashed into a mobility scooter. The operator of the scooter was deceased on the scene. There were three occupants in the pick up truck; a driver and two passengers. The driver Angus T. Davis III, of Largo, was arrested and charged with DUI Manslaughter. The victim was operating his mobility scooter and attempted to cross from the east side of Missouri Avenue to the west side of Missouri Avenue at a median break. Angus Davis was driving his 1997 GMC Sierra pick-up truck Northbound on Missouri Avenue. Davis struck the victim in the median northbound lane. Davis and his two passengers were not seriously injured in the crash. The victim, Jack Schaffer of Largo, was deceased at the scene. The Largo Police Department reconstructed the crash and conducted a subsequent investigation to determine fault in the crash. Part of the investigation dealt with determining if the driver (Davis) was impaired and if so, his level of impairment. The investigation revealed that the victim was properly crossing Missouri Avenue. Further it revealed that Davis' blood alcohol level was .348, which is over four times the legal limit of .08. On January 15, 2008 the Largo Police Department's Traffic Homicide Investigators reached a point in their investigation where they were granted an arrest warrant for DUI Manslaughter on Davis. On January 16, investigators responded to Davis' residence at 1654 Clearwater-Largo Road and arrested him for DUI Manslaughter. Davis had been drinking when the investigators made their arrest. Davis was transported to Pinellas County Jail and his bond was set at $150,000.
