Flag pole in Largo CemeteryTo: Commander Milburn O'Baugh, The American Legion Thank you for your recent letter to me regarding the lack of an American Flag at the City of Largo Cemetery. I did bring your letter to the attention of the city administration and the city commission at the commission work session of December 18. You will be happy to hear that the commission has received a memorandum from Joan Byrne, Recreation, Parks and Arts Director, that a purchase order has been issued by the city administration for the purchase of a flag pole for $850. Ms. Byrne further advises that staff from the Public Works Department will install the necessary electrical and lighting; the Parks Division staff will handle any required finishing work, including landscaping; and, the Parks Division staff will also be completing the on-going maintenance. The estimated total installation expenditure in time and materials is $2,000 - $2,500. Ms. Byrne further advises the flag will need to be replaced at least bi-monthly for an estimated annual expenditure of $800; and, that Parks Division staff will also be required to raise and lower the flag when protocol demands, as well as before and after storm events. The estimated annual time to accomplish these tasks is 12 hours. I understand the American Legion might be interested in providing a replacement flag as required which could save the city the estimated annual expenditure of $800. Again, thank you for bringing this matter to my attention and I am happy that the city is able to rectify the oversight. - (Mrs.) Mary Gray Black, Largo City Commissioner
