GFWC of Clearwater Presents Scholarships to Women on the WayThe main dining room at Belleair Country Club was packed. The occasion was the General Federated Woman's Club of Clearwater's Ninth Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show to benefit Women on the Way at St. Petersburg College. Greeting the more than 130 arrivals were Doris Todd and Mende Thorn. Tammy Harkins, event chairwoman, was also on hand to welcome the attendees. President Michelle Lowack later addressed the gathering. "By attending today, you have now become a person who is making a difference in our community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for attending and also ask you to consider joining us as a member of our club. I can promise that there is not a better feeling than that of helping others--the paychecks of the heart that you will carry with you forever," she said. As those attending feasted on truffle chicken, accompanied by fresh seasonal fruit supreme, green beans almondine, scalloped potatoes and multiple decadent desserts, a drawing was held for the many items, including gift certificates and gift baskets, donated by area merchants. TJ Maxx of Seminole presented the fashions in this year's show. Club members and students from the Women on the Way Challenge Center served as models. They included Loretta Balch, Caroline Brown, Jessica Charmatz, Taylor Charmatz, Chivon Cowart, Trudy Cummings and Sharon Gerike. Club members who sponsored WOW models and their guests that day were Caroline Brown, Patti Cain, Irene Cuerdon, Jeanne Dinnsen, Marjorie Di Fonzo, Lucille Dole, Lorraine Edie, Ronnie Helwig and Crystal Stultz. Highlight of the affair was presentation of $4,000 in scholarships monies to selected students in the Women on the Way program by club scholarship chair Jeanne Dinnsen. The recipients--Chivon Cowart, Paula Holmes, Amy Jammer, JoAnn Gregg and Diane Preston--are women who have returned to college to resume their education after an absence from the classroom. The Hacienda Girls Ranch, Hope Lodge, Boggy Creek Gang, The Watson Center, Clearwater Free Clinic, RCS Food Bank, The Haven, Hospice and Salvation Army are among the other charitable organizations GFWC of Clearwater has supported over the years. The club is open to new members. Persons interested in joining the group may call (727) 710-6116 for more information.
