Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

The big news this week is the exciting and great fun Easter Egg hunt, jointly sponsored by the Clearwater Beach Recreation Complex and the Clearwater Beach Association. Not only did the children find lots and lots of eggs, there was a special hunt for adults. What a sight -- adults racing across Mandalay Park with baskets swinging (some of them, no doubt borrowed from their kids). Merchants and business people in the area donated some really neat prizes for the hunt.

Reports are the Zumba classes, i.e. exercising to a Latin beat, at the Rec Center on Mondays at 7 p.m. and Tuesdays at 11 a.m., are a pleasant surprise to many trying it for the first time. Moving to the lively music is so easy that you forget this is exercise.

Over at the library new books are available. Hush My Mouth is obviously a southern book, one of the Southern Fried Mystery series by Cathy Pickens. Ms. Pickens manages to mix a twenty-year-old murder with a recent one -- throw in a trio of ghost hunters who mix it up with the resident bikers in a small town, and come up with an intricate but interesting murder mystery. The book is sprinkled with menus and customs that enliven the tale of an ordinary murder in an extraordinary town.

Also extraordinary is a novel by Anne Rice. This is the second in a series on Christ The Lord, written from the viewpoint of Jesus of Nazareth and liberally sprinkled with details from Ms. Rice's imagination. Although information contained in the Bible is accurately reported, the author creates non-Biblical situations and events to flesh out the story. It is a well written and readable story. Whether or not the author succeeds in giving an accurate picture of what went on in the mind and heart of Jesus of Nazareth is for the reader to decide. The title of this part of the story is The Road To Cana.

Just a reminder -- there are two computers at the Beach Branch Library for the use of patrons. You'll find the library in the parking lot behind the tennis courts on Mandalay Avenue.
