On Saturday, April 5, members of the Clearwater Flotilla, 11-1, of the Coast Guard Auxiliary participated in the 21st annual spring coastal cleanup organized by Keep Pinellas Beautiful. Over 100 lbs. of garbage was collected from the spoil island in the Intracoastal Waterway located west and north of Coachman Park--an island popular with boaters. In addition the island was being cleared of non-native invasive plants, such as Australian pines, by the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection, Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserves. The amount of trash on the island has significantly decreased over the past few years and when the habitat is restored the island should become an attractive destination for recreational boaters.
