CLEARWATER - Garden clubs present flower shows for a number of reasons. To educate their members and the viewing public is one. To provide an outlet for creative expression among the members and to stimulate an interest in horticulture are among the other reasons the Clearwater Garden Club plans a standard flower show each year. This year's event took place on March 28 and 29 featuring the theme, "My Favorite Things". An awards reception was scheduled at 5 p.m. on the 28th.

Entries were submitted in two divisions. Overseeing the entries in Division I (Design), which included Table Artistry, Tricolor and Designer's Choice, was Alice Jarvis. Liz Buchanan coordinated the entries in Division II (Horticulture), which featured hanging plants, container grown plants/floor specimens, container grown plants/blooming, container grown plants/foliage and arboreal/specimens of trees or shrubs.

Griselda Nunez took first place in Designer's Choice, where the designer had complete choice of all components. She received a blue ribbon for her freestanding entry in Class 9 (Carnival). Submissions in Designer's Choice, Class 8 (Sports) were "framed", with the designer naming her favorite sport. Swimming was Marsha Clark's focus when she created the arrangement which earned her a first place blue ribbon in that category. Top Awards went to Belen Brown (Designer's Choice), Laura Daniel (Horticulture) and Alice Jarvis (Table Artistry). The Tri-Color Award was presented to Helen Hoskins.

Belen Brown served as chairman of the 2008 flower show. Helen Hoskins was co-chair. Club president Hilda Sinnett was designated honorary chairman. Also serving on the committee were Caroline Kaufmann, awards; Marion Crane, judges; Laura Daniel, clerks; Elizabeth France, publicity; Marsha Clark and Arlene Wich, staging; Dona Leach, reception; Cathy Foley and Griselda Nunez, hospitality; Dorothy Bourneman and Liz Buchanan, classification/horticulture; Sylvia Bullaudy, Karen St. Martin and Arlene Wich, placement/horticulture; Jean Columbo, cover design.

The Clearwater Garden Club, whose headquarters are located at 405 Seminole St., is a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs and the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.
