Pinellas Pioneers Association to Hold Annual Picnic

SAFETY HARBOR - The Pinellas Pioneer Association will gather for its 45th annual picnic Saturday, April 12th, at 11 a.m., in Philippe Park at Shelter #2 near the big mound in Safety Harbor. Each family should bring their own picnic basket including food, beverage and place setting.

On January 1, 1912, Pinellas County became independent from Hillsborough County and in preparation for the Golden Jubilee in 1962, the Pinellas Historical Commission was formed February 23, 1961 with Ralph Reed appointed as the first historian. As excitement grew with the Golden Jubilee, Jay B. Starkey formed a committee on May 23, 1963 and founded the Pinellas Pioneers Association and all residents who had resided in Pinellas County on or before the year 1912 became Gold Start Members. Robert McMullen, a Gold Star Member, attended last year's picnic.

The descendents of Gold Star Members, their families, residents of Pinellas County for 30 years and anyone who has an interest in Pinellas County history is invited to attend the picnic.

For additional information contact Bob Delack, president of the Pinellas Pioneers Association at (727) 441-1338.
