Les Amore Receives Volunteer of the Year Award

TAMPA - United Way of Tampa presented Clearwater resident, Les Amore, with a Volunteer of the Year Award Tuesday, April 29th, at the Doubletree Hotel, Tampa Airport - Westshore. He was nominated by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and was the Animals and Environment winner.

Our community is fortunate to have individuals like Les Amore. At a local marine hospital, Les helps rescue and care for marine life, such as bottle nose dolphins, sea turtles, river otters and rays. After medical treatment and rehabilitation, some animals can be returned to nature, others remain at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Les literally "does it all." He helps greet visitors, rehabs sick and injured dolphins, gives "Behind the Scenes" tours, helping the public to develop an understanding and respect for marine life, and is a valuable member to the Marine Animal Stranding Team, often working the unpopular 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. shift. He also assists the Dive Team, helping to clean algae from the dolphin and sea turtle pools.

Besides the physical work Les gives, he is, undeniably, very passionate for the animals he cares for and the guests he educates. His enthusiasm is contagious to everyone he works with or greets. All the time and contributions that this valuable volunteer gives to the aquarium, is over and beyond his full-time job!

Les was nominated for his tireless dedication to making the Bay area a better place for both human and animal communities.
