Suncoast Animal League Needs Support 121 More Times Than Before

By Renee Burrell

On Monday, April 7th, the Suncoast Animal League rescued 121 Yorkshire terriers, Maltese and Pomeranian dogs, including puppies, from a puppy mill in Pinellas County. Over 20 of them needed immediate emergency veterinary care and to bring all to optimum health will cost an estimated $15-18k. Suncoast needs contributions more than ever to accommodate their latest intake as court hearings need to take place before new homes can be found for the dogs.

Anticipating the public's desire to adopt the dogs, Suncoast gave this statement, "The Suncoast Animal League was fortunate to have several veterinarian offices and pet boarding facilities contact us about housing the dogs which were taken from the Tarpon Springs puppy mill on Monday, April 7, 2008. All dogs are currently being tended to at these locations, as well as the Suncoast Animal League shelter. . .Due to custody court proceedings, we cannot provide a time frame for when the dogs will be available for adoption. Until we have gained full custody of the neglected and abused dogs, we cannot initiate any adoption procedures such as a waiting list."

Their website at: www.suncoastanimalleague.net will post updates on their progress, or they will e-mail updates by joining their e-mailing list.

Suncoast Animal League is a private, non-profit, 501c3, so funding for the shelter comes from charitable gifts. There are a few immediate ways to donate. Direct financial donations can be made securely online at: www.suncoastanimalleague.net or through postal mail to: Suncoast Animal League, 1030 Pennsylvania Ave., Palm Harbor, FL 34683.

Aside from accepting monetary donations, Suncoast holds numerous and interesting fundraisers.

Their next upcoming one will be their 2nd annual "Black Cat Adopt-a-Thon Weekend" held in June, Friday the 13th - 15th, at PetSmart Countryside.

All black cats will be featured for a special adoption fee of $13.
