Children's Banners Displayed in Conjunction with International Fiber Arts Conference

CLEARWATER - From now through Aug. 24, patrons at the Clearwater Main Library and Municipal Services Building can view an exhibition of 45 textile-inspired banners made by children.

The colorful banners were created by children from school, recreation, museum, magnet and arts programs in Hillsborough and Pinellas County. They were created in conjunction with "Convergence 2008," an international textile conference sponsored by the Handweaver's Guild of America to be held in Tampa until June 28.

Handweaver's Guild of America representatives, who invited children's art groups to participate in the banner program, promote the use of textiles and related techniques such as weaving, knitting, crocheting, braiding, etc., in the creation the 2-foot by 5-foot works. Teachers who already had educational projects underway were encouraged to integrate the subject matter into the creation of the banners, providing inspiration for the young artists.
