The Clearwater RingersCLEARWATER – You have probably heard the expression about a team bringing in a ringer. The following two are professional ringers. Warren Woolsey from Clearwater, and Wayne Cowger of Dunedin, are professional horseshoe pitchers. Warren and Wayne, in the last 10 years, have won so many tournaments it would take a whole sheet of paper to list them. Not only are they in the top 10 pitchers in Florida’s Elders League, they are ranked #13 and #29 in the top 50 of the world. What’s amazing about them is that they never stop playing horseshoes. Warren is the youngster of the two. He is only 84. You wouldn’t know it to see him pitch. Wayne is only 87 and says he’s just warming up. These two are great rivals and great friends. Between the two of them, in the last 10 years, they have won together or with another partner, seven Elders Doubles tournaments, five Mixed Doubles tournaments, and three State Elders Singles championships. These are just the state tournaments they have won, not counting the other local sanctions tournaments around the state they have to their credits. Warren and Wayne know that they have to practice, because at the Clearwater Horseshoe Club where they pitch, there are also six other members ranked in the top 10 ringer percentages in Florida State’s Elder class. If you ever wanted a ringer on your team, you would take either one. This just goes to show that horseshoes is a lifetime sport. Any time you think you might be too old or too young to start, just look at what Wayne and Warren have accomplished in the last few years. The Clearwater Horseshoe Club invites you to join the club to pitch. Click on www.geocities.com/chc19732002 for information.
