Winter on NBC Nightly News

CLEARWATER - Coming off a highly-rated appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America two weeks ago, Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) announced that the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams aired a segment Friday nght, June 27th, on CMA and Winter, the young dolphin who lost her tail and quickly became one of the world’s best known animals.  The segment featured Winter’s inspiring story and her relationship with two individuals, and also updated the technology being used by Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics to develop her prosthetic tail.

A 2-½-year old Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Winter was stranded near Cape Canaveral in December, 2005, after being caught in a crab trap line.  Her tail fluke eventually came off, as it was severely damaged by the rope entanglement.  After being transferred to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Winter was given round-the-clock care in an effort to save her life.  Having survived, she then adapted to a side-to-side swimming style, as she had no tail fluke to give her thrust.

Winter’s story has become the most-watched animal story in recent years, having previously been featured in most major news outlets, including the BBC, USA Today, Time Magazine, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, National Geographic for Kids, and coverage in hundreds of international and national market newspapers and TV affiliates.
