Clearwater Garden Club Begins New Season

Photos/text by Sandi Fahy

Flavia Mersmann, center, invites Sylvia Bullaudy, left, and George Wich to join her in making lemon basil pesto at the August meeting of the Clearwater Garden Club's "Garden on Saturday" group. Mersmann's demonstration focused on pesto variations. She also discussed the varying tastes among olive oils and provided samples, allowing those attending the opportunity to taste the difference. Other speakers that day were Jane Maxwell, who talked about using worm castings as fertilizer, and Arlene Wich, who displayed and discussed cactuses and other succulents. "Garden on Saturday" meetings, which are scheduled the third Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at garden club headquarters, 405 Seminole Street, were started three years ago to provide a gardening experience for persons unable to attend general meetings during the work week. Next meeting of the Saturday group will be September 20. General meetings of the club are held the second Friday of each month, September through May. The first meeting of the new year for the Friday group will take place on September 12. For further information on either of the above groups, call 441-9374.

Arlene Wich, standing at right, takes a question from a member of the audience at the August 16 meeting of the Clearwater Garden Club's "Garden on Saturday" group while others take a closer look at one of the many succulent plants she introduced and provided information on that day.
