Sallie Parks Speaks at Rotary Club of Clearwater Meeting

(l-r) Doug Hilkert, President Rotary Club of Clearwater, Sallie Parks, Pinellas Board Member, Southwest Florida Water Management District, Jared Brown, Past Rotary District Governor, member Rotary Club of Clearwater

Members of The Rotary Club of Clearwater welcomed Sallie Parks, Pinellas Board Member, Southwest Florida Water Management District, to its weekly noon luncheon held at the Belleair Country Club on Wednesday August 27. Sallie slowly waded into the subject: “Everything You Wanted to Know About Water But Were Afraid to Ask.” She explained that Florida is divided into five water districts and the Southwest Florida District runs from Levy County south to Charlotte County and east to Polk County. She provided lake level data and indicated that during the first 20 days in August lake levels were up in Tampa Bay but were still below the normal base level. Rotary members were pleased to hear that sustainability was not an issue. Citizens will always have fresh drinking water no matter how large an increase in population.

Sallie Parks, a resident of Palm Harbor, was appointed to the SWFWMD Governing Board in March 2006. Her term expires March 2010. A resident of Pinellas County for 42 years, Parks retired as a lobbyist for St. Petersburg College in 2003. From 1992 to 2000, she served as Pinellas County Commissioner and while a commissioner, she served for two years on the Board of Directors of Tampa Bay Water. She was also the first Executive Director of the Pinellas County Arts Council and directed public relations and marketing for Mease Health Care for 10 years. Sallie was president of the Rotary Club of Dunedin in 2003-2004.
