Miniature Trains Attract All Agesby Sandi Fahy
Photo by SANDI FAHY LARGO - All aboard! More than 2,000 persons responded to that call at Largo Central Park last weekend. Young and old alike were attacted to the miniature train rides which were provided free of charge by the Largo Central Park Railroad Live Steamers. The Largo organization, which is a member of the Florida Live Steamers, offers the rides to the public the first full weekend of each month. The steamers, who originally created the miniature railroad on the old County Fairgrounds, rebuilt the entire track when the fairgrounds were turned into Largo Central Park a while back. The trains take riders around the park and through a large tunnel, which adds to the overall experience. The engines are one-eighth of the full size versions. Those familiar with trains will recognize the scaled down replicas of an F-7 unit, a G-7 unit (with its Seaboard markings) and the popular steam engine model of the Pennsylvania Atlantic, a passenger locomotive. To date there has been no charge for this fun family activity, but donations are welcomed to help keep the trains running. The next Train Weekend is scheduled October 4-5. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Largo Central Park is located at 101 Central Park Drive.
