Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Oh my goodness - have you checked out the new exercise room at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center and Library?  The equipment is standard, but the view is extraordinary.

Well I remember the evening, years ago, when the Clearwater Beach Association Board of Directors descended on the Recreation Center.  Someone had challenged the Board to help the Center financially and the members made a spontaneous decision to check out the Center right then and there.  As the hapless director of the Center watched, we spread out to investigate.  The whole group crowded into what was a black hole that held the exercise equipment.  There were no windows and practically no circulation and the atmosphere was -- well - unpleasant.  One lady board member came out waving the air in front of her nose.  Before we left the building the Beach Association president was seeking ways to get a room deodorizer to the Center as soon as possible.

That was, of course, before they remodeled the building the first time.  The new exercise room was larger and better air conditioned. But it took the latest renovation to add that big picture window with the view of Clearwater Bay.  Wow!  I probably would get up enough energy to climb on one of those machines if I didn't know that the same view is available right next door from a "comfy" chair in the library.  Oh, well, to each his own.

Remember, new hours at the Clearwater Beach Library are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  But, on the East side of the building, there is a book drop, as well as a book drop inside the Recreation Center so you do not have to wait for "open" hours to return your books and DVDs.
