80 + and Still Pitching Strong
On Saturday, October 4, the Clearwater Horseshoe Club kicked off its season opener. Mable Adcox from Beverly Hills, FL, made the 2-hour trip to the Clearwater Club down US 19. Mable ,who just took up the sport three years ago, has become an avid pitcher. Mable will usually arrive about a half hour before the starting time, helping to get all the equipment in place that’s required for the tournament. If Mable is not pitching in the morning session she will volunteer to keep score, until the afternoon session starts. By keeping score you can usually earn enough to buy your lunch and a refreshment. On this day Mable won her class; she had (4) wins and (1) loss. Each game consisted of pitching (50) shoes for a total of (250) shoes, for the tournament. She was tied with one other player, but the win went to Mable, as her opponent also with the same record, was defeated by her. Ben, a new member of the club in his mid 20s now knows who Mable is. Congratulations. Mable also travels to other clubs to compete during the season. She has pitched in over 23 Tournaments this last season. The Beverly Hills Club where Mable is a member also hosts (8) tournaments a year and will be the site for the Florida State Championship in April of -2009. The Clearwater Club hosted the event last year, which usually consisted of (4) days of pitching with over (150) entries. There are over (90) tournaments scheduled for this season throughout other Floridian active clubs. It just goes to show you’re never too old for Horseshoes.
