Hook - (1) A curved piece of metal used to catch fish. (2) A clever advertisement to entice a fisherman to spend his live savings on a new rod and reel. (3) The punch administered by said fisherman's wife after he spends their life savings (see also, Right Hook, Left Hook). Line - Something you give your coworkers when they ask on Monday how your fishing went the past weekend. Lure - An object that is semi-enticing to fish, but will drive an angler into such frenzy that he will charge his credit card to the limit before exiting the tackle shop. A trip to a local superstore left me with a lot of questions this week. Have you seen the reels that have handles that light up with LED lights when you reel them in? Did you buy one? Cool, huh? Did you know that there is a lure that has LED lights for its eyes? A company named WinkyEyes started by a janitor in southern California makes these. I’m serious. Check it out online. Only $13.99 ea. They claim the lure works great after a storm has come through and the water is murky, its night outside, or even when the water is rough and choppy. Bikini Lures of Buffalo, NY is making lures that utilize a microcomputer, 14 super-bright LED lights and a digital sound system. You have to recharge the lithium battery in the lure between uses. The lure is water activated meaning it’s off till you cast it in. And all this just to imitate a real bait fish.

Where is this technology taking us? What’s next? Are we going to digitally record the sound that a shrimp makes swimming through the water and then micro-process the sound into a rubber replica of a shrimp? Why not just buy shrimp? Who is getting caught here, the angler or the fish? Lately, I’ve been paying a lot of attention to the locals and charter boat captains that have been fishing these waters for many years or in some cases, for many generations. They all have one thing in common. They fish simple. Rod – Reel – Line – Weight – Hook – Bait. That’s it. Real simple. And guess what? They catch fish! Big fish! A lot of fish! Everyone has a great story that goes, “One time when I was fishing, this little kid walks up with a Mickey Mouse rod and reel and walked away with the biggest fish of the day.” Maybe simplicity is the key to improving our quest for the biggest and the most? hmmm Fall fishing seems to be winding down a bit due to the changing water temperatures. If you are heading out to catch some King mackerel this week, stop by the Bait House for your pre-rigged ballyhoos. They have been working great trolling them at about 5 knots.
