Recs and Reads

By Anne McKay Garris

Now that the weather is cooler -- it's Tennis Time. The tennis courts at the Clearwater Recreation Center and Library are the best deal in town. They're close at hand. There's easy parking beside them. Right now, they are seldom crowded and, best of all, the price is right. There is no charge.

Don't know how? Nevermind. Tennis lessons are scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, on Mondays. Call the Center for information on how to sign up for lessons. Simply dropping by for a game does not require a reservation.

If you're looking for a way to do something besides eat large lunches, try dancing your lunch break away. (It used to be dance the night away, but, what can I say -- we're older now.) Join the Line Dance group at the Recreation Center on Thursdays, from 11:00 to 12:00 pm. You'll find the exercise will energize you much better than a plate of fries and a burger -- if you eat something healthy and be sure and tank up on water. Leastwise that's what the jillions of articles on good health keep saying.

Nine people were on hand for Jan Golden's workshop on writing memoirs. She started with instructions to draw a picture of the first neighborhood you remember. Just doing this triggered all sorts of memories that were immediately turned into stories and read at the workshop. I surprised myself by finding 17 story topics just from drawing the picture -- and I can't even draw.

And, on Thursday afternoon, eight people came to hear Vicki Jackson's knowledgeable talk on herbs. Vicki, a Master Gardener working with the Master Gardener program of the Pinellas County Extension Service, brought samples of herbs from her own collection. Members of the audience sniffed and tasted a variety of herbs that can be grown in pots, or in the ground in Florida. Among these were the distinctive lemon thyme and a Greek Oregano. There was sharing of recipes and a wide assortment of handouts provided by the Extension Service.

The next Master Gardener program on growing things in Florida will be held on Thursday, December 4, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Center multi-purpose room. The programs are sponsored by the Clearwater Beach Library.

If you just got back from summer, you will be delighted to know that the new exercise room at the recreation center is unequaled in the city. Come - enjoy!
