Born To Fly On Sunshine…

New picture book tells an engaging tale about an albino crow who embraces being "different" from the rest

Clearwater Beach, FL – (November 2008) – Navigating the crowded skies of a large family can be difficult for a child. Author Donna Malloy often flew too close to her older sisters, shadowing their every move. But eventually, all birds must leave the nest to discover their own voice and learn how to fly on sunshine.

Donna was inspired to write the story of Criss Crow after her own brood left for college, leaving her an empty nester. Drawing from her childhood experiences as the middle of six children and that of her own children, Donna began weaving a layered tale of self-discovery and self-love to write her book: Criss Crow, Flying on Sunshine.

How would you feel if you were told you were different? "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will always hurt me" applied to Criss; names did hurt him. Criss was a happy crow until sister Callie told him he was "weird."

Criss' reaction: "If we all came from an egg, why do I look so different?"

Wise Granny K explains to Callie that names are like feathers in a pillow; "once they come out, you can never put them back again."

Then one day, Criss is called upon to save Callie from the hungry, grey owl. Rounding up the crow neighbors, Criss sheds his layers of doubt and learns to "shine" in his true colors. Now Criss becomes a leader among crows and learns to fly on sunshine.

The story of Criss Crow takes you on a heartfelt journey of sibling rivalry and love where they both learn to appreciate each other's differences. Feathered with crow fact footnotes and illustrated by the author, the story of Criss Crow can be enjoyed by all ages, because, there is a little bit of Criss Crow in all of us.
