Pretending
by Bea Morgan

These winter days remind me
of my childhood long ago,
When I would sit beside my window
and gaze out on the snow.
At the little sparrow feeding
on pieces of bread and grain
That I had placed so fondly
out on a window pane.

To me, the scene was like a fairy land
with hills and valleys of snow.
The birds were little soldiers
that marched all in a row.
Up and down the valleys they would go,
Stepping oh so high -
And I would be so quiet,
for fear I would make them fly.

What fun it was to watch them
from my cozy little chair
I'd pretend I was their playmate
and they didn't seem to care.
I would march along beside them
upon those tall white hills,
And then we would play "hide and seek"
and take a lot of spills.

Alas, I was only dreaming
for I would hear my mother's call
I would have to leave my feathered friends
and say goodbye to them all.

I promised I would be back the next day
in my favorite little chair,
And pretend I was playing
with my newfound friends out there.

Best wishes to all of our readers for a beautiful holiday season.
