Budget Letter sent to Largo Mayor and CommissionersI’m sorry that I missed the meeting at the library and I applaud your efforts at seeking the input of your constituents. I realize that I may well be “swimming against the tide” but I don’t think during these financially trying times that there can be any “sacred cows”. I love the library, the parks, the cultural center and the rec department facilities - I use them all. Having said that, do what you need to do. My observation over the years is that people have self interests which they tend to protect. Rarely do they think in terms of the common good. Just as the nation would survive mail delivery reductions to 4 or 5 days per week, we would survive the limited closing of facilities. In time you adjust to the fact that the library is closed on Wednesday. Other programming such as the recent clown day may need to go as well, assuming there is a cost that is funded by the public. It’s one of those things that’s nice, but not necessary. Lastly and this is touchy – since 9/11 the Fire and Police Departments have been politically untouchable. You have heard it a million times “The courageous men and women who put their lives on the line daily for us all.” No disrespect intended, but there are many days spent washing the trucks and cooking. There are firefighters who have never fought a serious fire except during training. Those who work in these life/safety fields choose that career, and they are fairly compensated when one looks at the entire package. Again I repeat, do what you need to do and nothing is off the table. We the citizens will adjust. Paul Applefield
