Woofstock is Something to Bark About

Photos/text by SANDI FAHY

Buttons and Isabell, the Bischeon Frise puppies pictured above with owners Penny and Herb Voelker, attracted the attention of Sadie Wingate, 2, at Woofstock, a special day for the dogs at Largo Central Park on February 7. Buttons and Isabell are therapeutic pets, who visit some 160 patients a month at nursing homes and Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, according to the Voelkers. The 2 1/2 year-old dogs also take part in Project Pup. Woofstock, which was coordinated by Mandy Peterson of the City of Largo Recreation, Parks & Arts Department, featured demonstrations, contests, musical entertainment, dog training classes and pet product vendors.

Melissa Knowles and Angie, a 10-year-old golden retriever, enjoy each other's company while awaiting the results of the Hippie Dippie Dog Costume contest at Woofstock at Largo Central Park on February 7. Judges awarded Angie, who was wearing a glittering purple wig and white T-shirt, third place. Contests were also held for longest tail, smallest pup and groviest pet/owner pair. The longest tail award went to Semi, a Great Dane owned by Keith Brooks. Semi's tail measured 24 inches.
